Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration Foundation ~
SHFBAC Deltas Rally for Juneteenth Parade

The Suburban Houston-Fort Bend Alumnae Chapter (SHFBAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. rallied its membership for its first participation in the Annual Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration Foundation (MCJCF) Parade held on Saturday, June 20, 2015.  The MCJCF’s purpose is to bring positive attention to African-Americans, while celebrating the Emancipation Proclamation as it relates to the state of Texas and the long-awaited announcement of freedom for the slave population confined within its territory known as Juneteenth.

The parade theme for 2015 was “One Mile of Smiles”. SHFBAC incorporated the parade theme into its float design centered on the sorority’s national five point programmatic thrust: Economic Development, EDSC_0125ducational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Political Awareness and Involvement and Physical and Mental Health. In furtherance of the chapter’s effort to promote the programmatic thrust, various chapter committees walked behind the float representing each facet of the five point thrust.  The Program Planning and Development Committee, which services the youth in our committee, represented Education along with some of the youth from our Delta Academy, Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) and EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) programs. The Healthy Lifestyles Committee stressed the importance of physical health and distributed fans to raise awareness of breast cancer.  The Social Action Committee represented Political Involvement while raising awareness of child abuse by distributing fans labeled “Stop Child Abuse”.  Other chapter participants included the Executive Committee (elected officers), Executive Board (appointed officers and positions, committee chairs and co-chairs), Past Presidents and our beloved Delta Dears (senior members).  The Dears were easy to recognize as they motivated the crowd by shaking their purple pompoms and fans.

The SHFBAC MCJCF Parade Committee was rewarded for its efforts by bringing home the Best Parade Theme trophy for its beautiful float.  Fun was had by all who attended and SHFBAC helped to highlight the positive works done within its community by those ladies in crimson and cream known as “The Deltas””!
